MACHE RING BOX
She liked it, so she put a ring on it
This weeks' DIY is this gilded mache ring box. I initially had my sights set on getting a wooden box to decorate, but I was struggling to find a reasonably priced hexagon-shaped one - we have a bit of a geometric theme going on so hexagons will feature throughout the wedding - so instead I picked up a mache one for just £1.20 from Hobbycraft.
I started by adding a rough layer of phthalo green acrylic. Next i built up layers of decopage paper in this lovely crackled green and gold design (which matches our colour scheme perfectly!) using Mod Podge as an adhesive and sealant. I added some splotches of paint over the top, as I wanted a distressed feel with a slight marbling to the colour. Next, I added Cosmic Shimmer gilding flakes to the lid, again trying to achieve a more patchy, distressed feel; it was my first time using the flakes and boy, do they get everywhere! Even Wispa, my cat, was gilded by the time I had finished. These were sealed with some further layers of Mod Podge. I used letter and number dies to die cut the N & C, and also the date of our wedding for the inside of the box. Lastly, I used a square of hessian crumpled up and adhered to the inside with a glue gun for the rings to rest on.
I am so happy with how it looks; can't wait to order our rings now!
